Does trying repeatedly in an assured not desperate way work with girls?

Here's a little context in a situation I found myself recently. Started seeing a girl, took her on a date, and made out with her numerous times when out socializing and stayed at her house and she was interested.

Recently she has went a little cold, was flaky about a second date but continued to text me, i've found out she has been seeing another guy which is fine as we are both single and I do the same. As such I assumed she was not interested anymore. As a result I went no contact. She then contacted me twice when drunk. I'm not too sure whether she is seeing the other guy but I have not contacted her and have talked to her once in a social setting.

Past experience has taught me to move on to another one in such situations but I'm wondering did I give up too easily in this situation? She has always returned my texts but when hearing about another person on the scene I instinctively withdrew as she was not as responsive as before and as a measure to protect myself considering I was invested in this girl.

Is it worth it giving it another shot which is now two weeks on or leaving it?

Sometimes I wonder whether or not if I tried harder I may have succeeded further in my attempts. On the flip side when she went a little cold I perceived pursuing would not have helped the case.

To persist or let it go?

I've been told by a lot of guys that's it's always best to avoid dating girls when you're still in high school and avoid dating any girls younger (or a girl that is at least below age 24) than you since their experience with them is not so good and filled with unnecessary drama and lack of mutual reciprocation (usually the younger girl always making it everything about her). I'm sure there are some younger girls, even as young as age 18, who genuinely are mature and level-headed for their age but I don't know. I'd rather protect myself from getting myself into something I know that'll make my life hell.
