So my whole life, I've always assumed girls/women had on small spandex shorts when they wore skirts/dresses.

However, me and my girlfriend went to the beach the other day... and after we were done having fun at the beach, we put on regular clothes over our swim wear. And she just whipped on a dress, above the knee length on top of her bikini in 5 seconds, and said, "I'm ready honey!" And I asked her, "Really? I mean you don't really have anything on under your dress. You have your bikini bottoms, but they just basically look like underwear. Are you really gonna go walk around in public like that?" And she laughed really hard, and said that you're not supposed to wear anything but underwear under a skirt/dress, and that she and all of her friends just wear underwear, and no girl she knows wears shorts or anything else underneath.

It was then that my fucking mind was blown... so every time I saw a girl in a skirt/dress, she most likely only had underwear underneath? It's especially weird in a skirt/dress that goes above the knees. Meaning if only she spread her legs out a bit more, everyone would see her underwear? Does the average women really not care about that type of stuff?

As a guy that's a pretty absurd thought, as the male equivalent of that would be whipping on a long shirt slightly above the knee, wearing only some boxer-briefs underneath, and just going out in public like that...

And as such, I'm here asking to see what the general thing REALLY is.

Is it just simply the way skirts/dresses are traditionally worn, but most women are still bothered and wear shorts? Do most women not care and just wear the underwear?

Maybe I'm just overthinking it. I'm trying to literally relate to girls who wear skirts/dresses with the long shirt thing, when I'm not even SUPPOSED to. Skirts/dresses are a girl thing. Just wearing underwear underneath for in specific girls is normal, and not something guys should relate to.

But maybe my thoughts are reasonable after all

So growing up, my parents weren't very strict with the way my sister dressed at all. The only rule was no butt cheeks and no boobs spilling out... but other than that, my sister could wear all the upper-thigh length shorts, tank tops, above the knee skirts/dresses, and crop tops she wanted. Plus, my mom often wore thigh length shorts and tank tops too, so it'd be hypocritical for her to not let my sister wear them. We lived in Florida, after all.

As for swimwear, as long as it was secure (no ties) or anything and at least relatively modest (no thong, no overboard cleavage), my parents didn't care for my sister's bikinis either.

However, not every girl has had it as easy as my sister did...I had a female friend whose parents absolutely forbid her from wearing anything knee length or above. And we lived in Florida! Meaning the coolest thing she could wear was capris or a skirt/dress below the knee.

I also had a friend whose parents wouldn't even buy her a swimsuit, because they thought that even the most modest swimsuits were too revealing since they still show the arms and legs. So she couldn't ever go to the pool or beach. The pools/beaches were the best part about Florida!

So where did your parents lie? Did they not care? Were they super strict about modesty? Were they somewhere in between?

Some of you might be teen girls STILL living with your parents, and that's fine... I just assume most girls on here are adults. But you can answer too.

So I'm not going to go into the specifics and brands of what me and my girlfriend wear, but I will prove a small general description.

Me, for my bottoms I only wear pants at all times... I don't even own shorts or anything else. The only time I wear shorts is with swimming trunks when swimming at the pool/beach... swimming "pants" would be quite ridiculous, as it would be way too much material and drag down my swimming, and take forever to try. But in every other situation, I just wear pants. If we're going somewhere hotter and non-aquatic, I might wear thinner material workout type of pants... but it's still pants. As for my tops... I just wear regular t-shirts... either by themselves if it's hot, but usually with some type of long sleeved button up shirt, blazer, or a hoodie over it. I always button or zip it up fully.

Now my girlfriend... for her bottoms she wears a ton of different things. She wears pants as I do. But unlike me, she also wears shorts, and doesn't hesitate to show a lot of leg when it's hot. She also occasionally wears cute skirts and dresses, at least a day or two a week. They're either super long maxis, or a short-but-not-too-short above the knee length, in which is like a hand or two above the knee. For her tops, she usually wears a tank top or cute sleeveless shirt/blouse, either by itself, or with a long sleeved blazer or somethinng over it. However, she leaves it unbuttoned. Her tops always show her collarbones... and once in a while they show cleavage too, but not a lot. Only like a 2-3 inch crack. She has also worn crop tops a few times, in which stop just above her belly button, they're not too short.

Based on what I wrote, what do you think? If you asked me, I'd say her, as her clothing style is more varied and more unpredictable. But I want to hear from you guys, too.

My take on it is that if you're heavily into modesty/conservation you'll prefer my style, and that if you like variation you'll prefer her style.

It's acceptable and even hot and sexy for women to wear skirts , shorts , off shoulders dresses or dresses that show abdomen...

How about men wearing such dresses?
