Blue Zone were an 1 album band, featuring Lisa Stansfield on lead vocals. Pretty good album, also I liked her debut solo album as well…. it was influenced by da late 80s house movement.

Swing Out Sister were kinda similar in style…. although I didn’t like em much tbh…they had a few good songs though.

Same wid Scritti Politti…. although “Cupid & Psyche 85” was “ok”…. but just “ok”

Both bands fronted by Paul Weller. The Jam were punk rock/mod-revival, whilst Style Council were jazz/blue-eyed soul. Not my fav bands of dat era…. but if I had 2 choose, my fav albums would b “Sound Affects” by The Jam and “The Cost Of Loving” by SC…. da latter had a nice rap song as well :D

Oh well now, let’s go 4 the Scottish bands. The land of the best bands basically

Let’s begin with 2 indie pop bands of that era, Aztec Camera and Orange Juice. Aztec Camera had a bunch of hits during the 80s, and their biggest hit was “Somewhere In My Heart”, whilst Orange Juice had only 1 hit during the 80s called “Rip It Up” which was a synth-funk song basically, and not very similar in the style of most of their songs…Orange Juice’s singer Edwyn Collins would score a big hit again in the mid-90s with his song “A Girl Like You"

My personal fav would be “Love” by AC among the list,.. it was actually different than their first 2 albums, closer 2 the pop/blue-eyed soul style similar with bands like Breathe or Brother Beyond. “Working In A Goldmine” gotta b my fav song of the album.,.. and of course the classic “Somewhere In My Heart”

Van Morrison sure is one of the most popular Irish artists being active 4 more than 50 years basically., and still active today. His sound would be described maybe as celtic music with some soul or rock influences.

Anyway tbh although I’ve listened many albums by him…. never been into his music.

I might’ve liked a few songs from him, here and there, but not my style (he’s very “traditional” 4 my taste basically)

But i couldn’t leave him out, since he released 8 albums in the 80s…. so….:-P

although they were considered a 70s band they were still active in the early 80s basically

Sure they were the most popular Irish hard-rock band,and many great musicians came from this band like Midge Ure from Ultravox and Visage,or the famous blues guitarist Gary Moore,John Sykes and the frontman Phil Lynnot

Phil Lynott released 2 solo albums during the 80s...strangely totally different than Thin Lizzy's style....they were more synth-poppish basically.

"Yellow Pearl" is such a song basically.....a synth-pop classic by a rock legend. weird?

"Solo In Soho" had some other nice songs like "King's Call" or the very interesting "Talk In '79" which was describing what was happening in music,that very year

All of them were Irish pop-rock bands active during the late 80s and had some moderate success around their area basically

Interestingly though Hothouse Flowers managed to achieve some success in America as well with their songs “Don’t Go” and “I’m sorry” both charting at a good spot in both US modern rock/mainstream rock charts

(“Don’t go” reached #7 and #16 in US modern rock/mainstream rock charts respectively,and “I’m Sorry” reached #12 and #23)

And The Adventures’ song “Broken Land” was the most played song on BBC Radio 1 in 1988 basically

Although there were some differences according to musical styles within each band,but all of them were branded as “pop-rock”

The Adventures were closer to the post-punk/new wave sound especially in their first album “Theodore and Friends”

Cry Before Dawn were more “alternative rock”

Hothouse Flowers had soul influences (that explains their success in America probably)

and In Tua Nua had more Irish Folk influences.



My personal favorite would be “The Sea Of Love” by The Adventures basically….besides their hit “Broken Land” this album had some other nice ballads like “Drowning In The Sea Of Love” or “Heaven Knows Which Way”

Clannad are an Irish family band basically

Their style is irish folk music with some pop/rock elements and their most known hits r “Theme From Harry’s Game” and “In A Lifetime” (featuring Bono from U2). Their song “Theme From Harry’s Game” helped them achieve some commercial success basically,although they never became big stars

not a big fan of them tbh,but i like the song “In A Lifetime” since it’s kinda more pop-rockish and more accessible to the non-Irish folk music hardcore fan.

Boomtown Rats started in late 70s as a punk-rock band and later evolved into various other styles like new wave,reggae or synth-pop.

Band’s lead singer Bob Geldof is a well known activist and it was one of the 2 people who organised Live Aid in 1985 along with Ultravox’s Midge Ure

He followed a solo carreer as well,but his solo albums weren’t as good as Boomtown Rats’ works unfortunately

My favorite album by BR would be the ultra-underrated “V Deep”…i like the dark synth-pop style this album has,and songs like “Skin On Skin” or “Up All Night” are classics basically!

Now let’s go Irish basically!

The Pogues were one of the most popular Irish bands of that era….and not only because of their music but because of their frontman who was considered to be the ugliest musician alive:

Their musical style was considered “Celtic Punk” basically….fusing punk attitude/ethos with traditional instruments like Banjo,Mandolin or Tin Whistle.

Now we’ll examine some more interesting bands basically…yet unknown to public.

Young Marble Giants were an experimental band active in the early 80s realising only one LP though called “Colossal Youth” This album would be considered somewhat an album with Brian Eno’s signature effects,without Brian Eno on the production…a really good effort basically.

After a few years the band members splitted and formed 2 separate bands…The Gist and Weekend

Gist’s album “Embrace The Herd” was similar in style with YMG’s “Collosal Youth”,and i might say even better since it included a nice pop song within called “Love at First Sight”

The other band was called Weekend which later became “Working Week” scoring a minor hit in UK called “Venceramos We Will Win” basically

Another Welsh artist for today....

Shakin' Stevens was the 80s version of Elvis Prisley basically.... but even if he was he never managed to score any hit in US...oh well......bad luck i guess!

Anyway...i didn't like him much tbh...he was out of my style basically.....but i liked only a few songs of his from this part like "This Ole House" or "Give Me Your Heart Tongiht"

FGTH were one of the most controversial groups of that era because of their image, and the notorious "censored" video of "Relax" (their most popular song btw)

Despite their controversial image though, those guys were indeed great musicians. They made lots of covers from other artists as well.

Their first LP, Welcome to the Pleasuredome was kinda weird with a mix of music styles, but mainly it was new-wave/synth-pop.

Their second LP was my favorite frm them though, featuring a rockier, edgier style. Songs like "Warriors Of the Wasteland","Rage Hard" and "Kill the Pain" are 80s rock classics!

At the late 80s members Holly Johnson and Paul Rutherford had a short-lived solo career, yet they weren't successful.
