Path To Epic & Power Metal

Power metal is a subgenre of heavy metal combining characteristics of traditional metal with speed metal, often within symphonic context. Generally, power metal is characterized by a more uplifting sound, in contrast to the heaviness and dissonance prevalent in styles such as doom metal and death metal. Power metal bands usually have anthem-like songs with fantasy-based subject matter and strong choruses, thus creating a theatrical, dramatic and emotionally "powerful" sound. The term was first used in the middle of the '80s and refers to two different but related styles: the first pioneered and largely practiced in North America with a harder sound similar to speed metal, and a later more widespread and popular style based in Europe (especially Scandinavia, Germany, Greece and Italy), South America (especially Brazil and Argentina) and Japan, with a lighter, more melodic sound and frequent use of keyboards.

  • Might i add some (mainly scandinavian/europen bands)?

Centered around transylvanian themes (with an empathis on lycanthropism), and with an ironic approach to the bible and religious themes, the band combine high speed guitars and powerful drums with dark and forceful vocals.

    Primal fear
An underground band uthilizing melodic riffs and soaring vocals to create a powerful yet classic approach to the power metal genre

    Dream Evil
Yet another more classic power metal band, focusing on medieval and fantastical themes.

    U. D. O
Okay, i know i'm stretching the genres here, but i feel U. D. O should be mentioned. Featuring a solid mix of balads and more agressive songs, U. D. O never fails to give a deep meaning to their songs. What leaves you with the "wow" isn't just how well he plays, but the lyrics and the emotions he put into them.

A major sweedish force in the power metal genre, their songs revolving arround the theme of warfare and combat. Unlike most, they are not afraid to paint the true colors of war, nor honor the heroes. With an arsenal loaded with everything from power balads to powerful riffs, and an impressive vocal by Joachim Brodén, this band backs some serious metal power. It's worth mentioning the songs are historcially correct.

Sorry if i hijacked anything, i just feel good heavy metal should be for everyone :)

    • Oh, forgot one XD

Don't let the name fool you, they're not singing about dildos and sex toys. A fairly new band lead by the vocalist of Alestorm, playing what's described as a "mace to the face power metal", with a good old epic theme. Perfct for anyone liking the good old metal with a modern touch.
