They Don't Make'em Like They Used to: Cartoons for Girls

Watching cartoons with my niece, I realized HOW good I had it as I kid, watching amazingly creative cartoons that were perfect for little girls. Maybe it was a more innocent time but when I look back or even play some for her now, I see all the lessons a kid could learn from them. It's the higher principles and morality these characters portrayed to us which I miss. Modern day cartoons are all style and no substance. I could analyse them extensively for all their admirable qualities but some things are better left untouched, simply to enjoy.

Here are the cartoons I miss the MOST!

#5 Starwberry Shortcake was such a sweet and wholesome cartoon all about friendship. The characters are so down to earth and loveable. The dolls smelled great too!

#4 Care Bears were one of my favourites from the beginning, I loved all the aspects of my personalit they could represent (even though I had no clue at the time) and that at the end of the day they always cared and loved each other. Their home in the clouds was pretty cool too.

#3 My Little Pony had such a great array of characters with different personalities and attributes, and what little girl doesn't love ponies? The toys are still around even today they are so popular.

#2 Jem was an awesome show that mixed the music of the 80s with every girl's dream to be a pop star. I loved the Misfits too, their clothing and even good girl gone bad, Storm. I had the doll too with blue hair, she was wicked!

#1 She-Ra of course is probably a unanimous winner on every 80s girl list. I loved her relationship with He-man and even the vilain Catra was awesome. She-Ra always made the right decision and the lessons were obvious.

What are your fav cartoons? I'm sure I missed a few but these are the ones that remind me most vividly of my girlhood...

Personally as a kid all of the cartoons you've given pictures for scared me as a kid. My favorites are not in order but these were some of my favorites.

4) Rocket Power
5) Little Bear
6) Loony Toons
7) House of Mouse

MY OPINION: I really disliked all the first three cartoons, I felt that they were very cringey, there was no story-line and it portrayed a Utopia, and I could see that even as a kid. I don't think I ever saw Jem, She-Ra was pretty good.

Shows I loved the most:
1. Scooby-Doo
2. Tom and Jerry
3. The Jetsons
4. The Flintstones
5. Avatar The Last Airbender

But I think the reason you feel like your cartoons were so much better is mainly because of nostalgia, I feel like cartoons now are really bad but it's probably because of my nostalgia for the cartoons I loved.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (Might even be my all time favourite for the one reason that it was the first cartoon I watched religiously every single time it came on)

I wouldn't say cartoons used to be better. I love all my old cartoons, but I think the reason I love them so much is probably just the old reason why so many people like to say that things were better when they were younger - it's just nostalgia.

For some reason though, I hated the old My Little Pony. My sister watches the rebooted version of it, and I have to say I think it's so much better than the old one. She also watches a Disney Channel cartoon about a princess called Sophia, and I think it's wonderful.

Did anyone else have the CareBear toys? I remember my friends and I used to group hang out with our bears when watching the show.

I'm 22 and I loved avatar. I think nostalgia does play a part in it of course but honestly when I look at the content and lessons and meaning put forth by cartoons today compared to back when I was growing up... its truly not the same. sure I had some dumb cartoons, but I'd say 80% of what I had taught me life lessons and helped build upon values and had meaning in its messages. I mean I had the best of both worlds. I had the old cartoons like looney toons , but I had the new stuff at the time too. nostalgia does play a part but don't give it soo much credit as to dismiss the little if any at all message cartoons carry today. the last meaningful cartoon I saw that was recent was legend of korra. when I babysit my little cousins I see what they watch and I know what I'm comparing BUT then again this is simply my opinion.

I compare to what my sister watches, so it may be perhaps that my mother sneaked in the good ones, but I have to say that there are some great ones. Maybe I started watching TV too young, so all the deep meaning was wasted on me, but I'd say that there are some dumb cartoons in every generation. Or maybe I'm biased because I'm really fussy about my graphics and animation quality.

These aren't girls shows, they're just awesome shows. When my guy cousins came over we and my sisters would watch all of these together. And let's not forget It's Punky Brewster and Saturday morning cartoons like bugs bunny and baby looney tunes

I can go back now as a 22 year old, watch that show, and still pull lessons and meaning from it today. such a wonderful show. I see adult themes and problems in the show that I obviously did not catch as a kid. truly a gem.
