I hear all the time here, "I'm shy, no one ever talks to me, etc." It is extremely difficult for a man to approach a woman, in this situation we are talking about a 22 year old woman and we'll say a 45ish man. Both are within dating age, and yes he's probably a little old for her, and she handled it well.

But it would have been safer for him to not speak to her in the first place, he experienced rejection here. One of the comments was "that's why I don't speak to strange women" And there is nothing wrong with that either. But we can't have it both ways, you cannot expect only compatible people to approach you. If you are approachable people will talk to you, if you are not people, usually, won't.

I read another article in a running mag from the perspective of a young woman who had an older man ask her if she needed help with the controls of her treadmill. She rudely blew him off only to realize she actually knew him, but didn't recognize him (he was the father of her friend and was just trying to help)

I understand that age has a factor in both of these stories, but women blow off men all the time regardless of age.

So the question stands should guys speak to women they do not know?

I developed a crush on one of my classmates at my table in my physics class. She is very shy, insecure, has no male friends and doesn't talk very much. I tried to talk to her many times, but she wouldn't look me in the eyes and seemed to avoid any contact I attempted to make with her. She seemed to make more 'contact' with the other guy at our table (as minimal as it was) . She is very difficult to read and appeared to be either completely oblivious to, or ignoring my 'subtle hints'. I figured this was signs of a rejection so I ignored her completely.

Eventually, the class got re-assigned seats. I have an extroverted nature, I talked a lot with the people I found interesting (which is just about anyone with a pulse). I am also completely comfortable around most attractive girls (being that I am not in to most of the girls at our school b/c I don't like white girls :D). I quickly melded with the new people at the reassigned table and became acquainted with one my crush's friends (also an introverted girl). Our table was pretty loud and boisterous with conversation.

I had completely ignored her for a while (not even acknowledging her). I started to get the feeling she was staring at me out of the corner of my eye. I dismissed the feeling as being over-eager at first but then she started to become more obvious about it, going so far as to turn around in her seat and pretend to look at me and the so conveniently placed worksheet papers near me. If another person enters just in front of me she looks at me using the other person for 'cover'. She seems to always look up or at me when I passed by her table. Her expression (to the best of my ability) is a mixture of: kind of desperate for attention, confused, searching, maybe even a little sad?

I am very confused with what she is trying to convey. I thought she was trying to tell me to back off, but now her expressions while looking at me seem to hint otherwise. Should I try to re-establish contact and go for it?
