My husband and I have been married for two years. I work full time and he attends school (graduates next May).

Recently I was speaking with my mother in law about what our plans were following my husband's graduation and I mentioned that we were saving up for a downpayment on a house. My MIL told me not to worry about saving money because my husband has some money in an account from his grandparents and we "won't have any issue with a downpayment."

She then dropped the subject and refused to tell me how much was in the account (too be fair, I only asked once).

My husband had no idea about this account and when he asked her about it she told him not to worry about it.

I think it's highly unusual that my MIL would mention the account and then not say how much was in it - especially since it's her son's money and he's clearly an adult so. Plus if we knew how much was in there then we could properly budget for buying a house.

But then I thought that maybe I'm thinking too much and I should just let it go.

So... is it weird or nah?

Currently I'm just planning on acting as though the money doesn't exist and if there IS money in an account somewhere that he magically has access to in the future we'll just have a larger downpayment than originally planned.

We're engaged and my future in-laws have always been cool with me from the start. They get along great with their son-in-law and other daughter-in-law too.

This is my first and only time I've felt welcomed and like a member in the family. With my past two bfs, both of the mother hated me. I had to put up with their nasty attitudes so too long. Finally... no more awkward conversations with fake smile, no more limiting myself what to say, no more listening to an ''My son's ex girlfriend was great'' comparison, no more hypocrisy, etc.

Are good, kind in-laws like a needle in the haystack?

If you don't get along with your in-laws, can having a child bring peace and end the acrimony?

My mother is being a hypocrite to my boyfriend and he can sense fake people from miles away. He doesn't like her either for how she treated (unfairly) him in the past. They are on each other's fb contact list only because of me. I'm worried because we're getting married in the near future and I'm already imagining my mother's insincere smile and fake blessings. I'd rather get no approval (if it's not sincere) than see her just doing it out of resignation, always thinking he's not good enough.

I've heard before that a grandchild can bring miracles, settle past disputes between in-laws and promote permanent peace. How true is that? Or am I a hopeless, delusional dreamer and is not possible?
