Search Results: friend vs. relationship

I have very little experience with guys, and I am left unsure. There is a classmate of mine at my college who I speak with a decent amount, before class, after, and sometimes around campus. He is very nice and friendly, he smiles at me and will say hello when he sees me, and he volunteers things to talk about.

The last piece above is what I am most confused about... I can't tell if he is just being polite and kind, and if he might be offering the topics so that an awkward silence doesn't come.

He hasn't asked for my number or any other contact information, and he hasn't asked to hang out. There is also no unnecessary arm-touching or other physical indicators.

I really like him, and would love to be friends at least. We seem to have a lot in common. Should I take the step and offer my number? How could I do that in a more neutral way, so that he wouldn't feel pressured one way or another (friendship vs. relationship)?
