Putting aside all other factors other than the loss of a loved one, do you feel that one is more superior than the other from an emotional standpoint? Don't count financial loss, kids involvement, etc... I'm talking strictly about the loss people feel during a breakup or divorce. Do you see one as emotionally more damaging than the other?

My mother and I were having a disagreement on this topic and I decided to do a poll to get some outside advice.

My mother believes in a more spiritual/supernatural explanation for why she feels marriage holds a stronger emotional bond than a relationship without the title. She's Christian so she believes that God created man and woman to "become one" when they are married. She says that I can't fully understand it because I'm young and I haven't been married before. She says it's something someone just has to experience.

I agree with how divorce can most likely have a greater effect than a break up because most of the time dating doesn't hold the same responsibility that marriage does. The title of marriage and the fact that you're signing yourself away to a huge life commitment emotionally and financially automatically gives it an advantage. But I suggested to her that it is possible for a couple that's going through the breakup of a serious relationship to have the same emotional damage as a maritally divorced couple. Most long term dating relationships do explore/carry out the same duties that make up an officially married couple.

To me, marriage is just a title. I think how close a couple is during the relationship has wayyy more to do with how they'll feel once separated regardless of label. I explained that I think there's a logical explanation for why divorce might typically have more of an emotional effect than dating. There's gotta be a quantifiable reason as to why people often feel a greater connection when they have the marriage title.

So basically I used to be religious and ever since I stopped being religious, dating has been pretty difficult. And unfortunately, my social life as a whole has somewhat suffered.

Ever since I stopped being christian, all of my pursuits and hobbies have, unfortunately, become male dominated.

I studied engineering for undergrad and I am starting mathematics graduate school in the Fall. I spend most of my free time training martial arts, as in kickboxing and submission wrestling/brazilian jiu jitsu. I basically spend all my time in the gym or studying at this point. I tried tinder, but it didn't really work for me. Tried starting conversations with girls at coffee shops, etc. But the conclusion I have come to is that I need to somehow change my social life.

Basically, I am in pretty good shape, am well educated, not terribly awkward, but I don't know how to meet girls! Lol. Any advice?

I'm at a christian gap year program where dating is only allowed once your year is over. At the beginning of the year one of my friend showed me that a girl liked me.(We've been friends for 4 months now.) So I was so excited to find out if it was true. I asked her over WhatsApp. It turned out that we both like each other (bear in mind I last spoke to her about this before Valentine's Day. Its now the 30th of April.) We have a no one on one rule with the opposite sex (it's crap I know) The girl I like isn't a rule breaker. We talk a bit when we see each other in group settings and thank God that there's no awkward feelings between us. I like this girl a lot and I want to date her but due to the rules I can't do so and she can't show that she likes me anymore because she's being watched by the people who run this program (long story). Basically I need advice on how to better the chances of us dating at the end of the year. Never once has a girl liked me first before and I'm not willing to let this opportunity to go so easily. I can't make a move because then things will be messed up between us because we have 4 terms in a year and we just started the second term. Can you please give me some advice. Thank You.
