Firstly, I know that my cat is unusual in his own little way! He’s a friendly giant chappy to his family but a total knob to other cats and a timid little baby with strangers.

But I’ve had lots of people comment that his relationship with me is odd for a cat.

He’s the first pet I’ve ever had so although I’ve known other animals I thought it was a normal pet/owner bond. Like... he comes to me for comfort, he sleeps in my bed most nights, he looks after me when I’m ill (visa versa), he will literally act catty to friends and boyfriends (he loved my ex until we broke up and then he got so protective he almost hissed at him), if I’m stressed or fatigued he wraps his paw around my finger, if I’m in trouble (like I’ve collapsed) and he finds me he alerts my family. When I worked, he learnt my work schedule and would wait outside for me to come home (he would leave about 10mins before I was due home and wait outside the front door for me).

Cats have a rep for being aloof bastards but the majority I have met have been lovely so I thought this was just cat motherhood!

Let me explain, everyone addresses their parents as “mom is cooking dinner.” “Where’s dad?”

But, our family.

We siblings say; “where’s your mom?” “What’s your dad doing?” “Where’s your mom and dad going?” “Who’s on the phone? Your dad, he says he loves you.” All of us speak to each other like this, when addressing our parents.

That a lot of strangers or friends found it weird when they hear us talking like this.

or we say: “hey mom, whatcha doin?” “Cooking dinner.” “Oh okay, where’s my dad?”
“Hey Papi.” “Huh?” What’s going on?” “I’m shoveling the snow.” “Oh okay, what’s my mom doing?”

It just makes MORE sense talking like this. We don’t say “mom and dad” just like that. Sounds weird.
