I've been working at a restaurant for almost a year. I get on with everyone there, as they're of a similar age group. After a few months of working there, a new girl started. Didn't think anything of it. I started talking to her and we began hanging out. I feel this started due to all the male staff continuously flirting with her and because I didn't, maybe she felt safer with me, due to not being of sexual threat. We would finish work around 22:00 and stay at the busstop until 8:00, just talking. We have so much in common, it's truly remarkable. People at work noticed how friendly we are with one another and started questioning what kind of relationship we shared. I'd respond to them with, "we're very good friends. She's a great person to hang out with"
However, the more people asked, the more cloudy my judgement became over the matter. I told someone at work that "she's my friend. Nothing more. Doesn't matter if I see her in any other way. If I do like her, it would be unfair to tell her, for she would think everything up until now has been a lie in order to let her guard down."
Since that discussion, I really felt emotionally frustrated. Are these thoughts my own, or the combination of everyone else's? I started seeing things differently. I stayed extra if her shift ended two hours later than mine. She has on more than one occasion, waited six hours for the restaurant to close and helped me clean up after. She tells me she's not social when it comes to calls or texts. We've messaged eachother 3000 times in the past month. I told her I wanted to see Les Misérables and she bought tickets. I suited up and took her to the Ritz before the show as a thank you. We even started a rumour that we're together at work, to stop the men sexually harassing her. All I want to know is does she like me? Are my thoughts of her actually mine or others around me?
