I personally think it is if you address the elephant in the room and talk about the potential to date. Personally, I've known my closest friend for about 4 years and we've talked about maybe dating. But both of us know that it likely wouldn't work, that we're not compatible in that way. So we've stayed as great friends! It does cause some issues though when one of us gets a new boyfriend or girlfriend because there's always that jealousy there. But she's like a sister to me, and it's not like that at all.
