Sounds overly dramatic, but hear me out:

Discovering the internet was magical: to find out that not only were there other people out there who shared my interests, but belonging to a community of people who create and discuss things. As a socially awkward child who loved Pokemon and drawing, I loved it. (Probably too much...)

I would come to enjoy watching: video game lets plays, reviews, fan animations, remixes and fan art. I promised myself that when ready, I would give back to the community by making my own content. While I would have loved to turn it into a career, I understood that was unlikely and i'd settle for doing it as a hobby.

But Europe plans to implement a new copyright directive that includes "Article 13" which makes websites liable for user uploaded content which could be considered copyright infringing and thus requires implementing filters. (While the article no longer specifies that websites NEED to use content ID filtering, it seems like the only feasible way to monitor the abundance of uploads. Example: 300 hours of video content is uploaded to YouTube EVERY MINUTE!) This is bad as these filters are known to make mistakes; so even perfectly legal content could be blocked.

People say: "maybe it won't happen" or "it won't be so bad", but research I do suggests i'm right to be scared of this because it impacts not only what I consume online but everything I wanted to make. I won't really know the impact this will have on me, but it's hard to remain optimistic when such a law is close to become a reality.

Why pursue creative avenues if people probably won't even be able to SEE what I create? I can't even enjoy the things I like because all I can think about is: "This is at risk due to article 13". I don't know what to do with myself anymore; the internet is everything to me; what else do I do?

I suppose it's not definite, but one thing is for sure; I have 2 years until it's possibly implemented. Should I even try to make content now?

Some pieces of advice here has actually helped me see things from a different angle.
Things I'd otherwise miss or touched my heart. It made me a better man.
As a thank you I'll write a mytake on whichever topic that interests you.

The advice will not be too generic I promise you. Most people keep the good secrets for themselves and never tell anyone. You have to learn the hard way like me.

In governance, sortition (also known as choice by lot, allotment, or demarchy) is the selection of political officials as a random sample from a larger pool of candidates. Sortition ensures all competent and interested parties have an equal chance of holding public office. It also minimizes factionalism, since there would be no point making promises to win over key constituencies if one was to be chosen by lot. Elections, by contrast, foster factionalism. For that reason, when the time came to choose individuals to be assigned to empowering positions, the ancient Athenians resorted to choosing by lot. In ancient Athenian democracy, sortition was the traditional and primary method for appointing political officials, and its use was regarded as a principal characteristic of true democracy.

Today, sortition is commonly used to select prospective jurors in common law-based legal systems and is sometimes used in forming citizen groups with political advisory power (citizens' juries or citizens' assemblies).

I've no intention whatsoever of doing this, but I ask because our next door neighbour apparently is, and has clearly just experienced a massive shock.

On Sunday, as I was mowing the front lawn, two girls walked past, who didn't 'fit' with the neighbourhood, and clearly didn't know where they were going. Before I could ask them if I could help them, one pulled out her phone, and then they walked up the drive of the neighbouring, currently empty, but furnished, property.

Later on that day, we heard a drone being flown above that house, and it became apparent, that there were increasing numbers of people there. When I went to the front to investigate, there was a film crew, making a music video in front of a sports car, draped with girls in costumes, with other girls dancing on the balconies of the house. All in all, my best guess is that there were about fifty or more people involved with this.

On Monday morning, the drive was strewn with cans and other rubbish, and the cars were gone. I called the estate agent, which is currently managing the property's sale, to report this. They knew nothing about it. They promised to call the owner, and come back to me. The owner was also not in the know.

'Surprisingly', the house in no longer available for a single night's rental (as of yesterday).
