Search Results: how to ask for a raise

My friend (married, female) told me she has the opportunity to ask her boss for a raise, but if she gets it, she'll likely be making more annually than her husband, and that makes her uncomfortable. She currently earns $1.00 less per hour than he does.

He's completely on board with her asking for the raise, but she's hesitant because she says it makes her feel weird to earn more than he does.

Maybe it's because I am the only income source in my household (husband is in law school), but I see absolutely no issue with her earning more than her husband, and honestly, I think not wanting to earn more than your spouse is probably the dumbest reason not to ask for a raise in the world lol

In my mind, it's all going into the same account and all you're doing is raising the quality of life for your family so who cares whose name is actually on the paycheck. I personally find the mentality that the man ought to be the breadwinner to be archaic and could potentially financially cripple a family if the wife restricts her earning potential to that which is less than the husband.

So... is it dumb to not ask for a raise because you don't want to earn more than your spouse?

They were underpaying me and likely would've continued had I not found out and brought it up. So they gave me a fairly substantial increase.

Is it bad to quit, considering I asked for the raise? I like my boss and the company, but the fact that they were lowballing me left a bad taste in my mouth, and also that they only fixed it when I found out.
