Search Results: ways to cheer him up

So this happened when I first came to the UK. As I was finding my way to my new house I'd never seen before, a random girl stopped me and this awkward conversation took place.

Girl: "You're really cute"
I was a bit out of it, since I was tired from traveling, carrying the luggage and so on, so I asked her to repeat.
Girl: "I said you're really handsome, Do you ever think that about yourself?"
Me: "Not really, but thanks, I guess?"
Girl: "You're welcome."

Then it was quite awkward and we kind of just said goodbye, and she went on her way. Admittedly, I could have handled the situation better, but hey... that's me. We were the only two people within probably a mile. It was dark, around midnight, and I was carrying a large suitcase and a laptop bag, probably looking quite tired, which is why I thought maybe I looked a bit down and she was trying to cheer me up? I still don't know if that was the case. Was it? Or am I missing out on something here due to being dense?

What makes me even more curious, is the fact that this had never happened before and still has never happened in my home country. But it did happen a few times since then in the UK, though usually by what seem to be intoxicated girls, so I never really think much of it. Realistically speaking, I'm not really that attractive and although I'm not fat, I'm not in great shape either. So what is up with this?

Any UK people care to share? Any other foreigners living in the UK who've noticed something similar?
