So, simple question. If you can be punished or persecuted for your political beliefs/stance, do you actually have political freedom?

For example 1, let's say I found out how Person A voted in the last election... and unlucky for him, he's in an town that's strongly the opposing party. I start a small agitator campaign, and persuade his employer we'll cause havoc if he's not fired. He's fired, despite his political beliefs being pretty basic for the DNC/GOP party lines.

Example 2: I found out someone donated money to an interest group that was on the winning side in a democratic vote, say over a State Constitution Amendment. But I didn't like it. So I get an angry Twitter campaign/harassment of the company, declaring he must be fired, and must publicly repent for donating money to said group.

So what do you say? If you're in a country where "punishing" someone for their political beliefs is accepted and legal and common via attacking their personal lives/jobs, do you truly have political freedom?

(And for sake of argument, we'll say that said people had political beliefs very close to what the DNC or GOP party lines hold. No Animal Liberation Front or Neo-Nazis or crazies.)
