Being a pure mathematician, I much prefer the abstract over real-world applicability and practicality. Something about solving intangible problems strictly using your intellect and thought processing rather than a handheld tool, and being able to delve into and ponder upon ideas that are nothing more than a product of our applied imagination, just feels more engaging and stimulative, as well as more rewarding and fulfilling.

I find it more interesting to learn about Einstein's thought experiments, for example, rather than putting some chemicals into a tube and watching them change color or heat up or whatever.

Of course, this is a false dichotomy because practical work is often based off a theoretical framework (such as getting a plane to fly), meaning there's an intrinsic interconnectedness between the two, but is there generally one that you prefer over the other?
