Regardless of one's personal opinion of "Roe vs. Wade", it has to be acknowledged that a Supreme Court ruling has certain legal ramifications.

As a result of the "Roe vs. Wade" decision, a woman's pregnancy was determined to be autonomous and protected by a constitutional "right to privacy".

The Supreme Court ruled that it is solely a woman's conscious and deliberate "choice" to either bring a child into the world, or to terminate a pregnancy, without any regards for the wishes of the man involved.

Therefore, for child support laws to be consistent with the application of law that our system of jurisprudence demands, a certain relationship must exist between a birthmother and a biological father. If the birthmother has the legal means of a "contract" of marriage or an "implied contract" of a definable relationship with the biological father of her child, only then should the law be applied to require that man to provide support for that child.

If a birthmother does not have the obligatory "contract" with the biological father, then that man should not be required to support a child that the birthmother unilaterally chooses to bring into the world. The only other scenario that would justify the application of child support law is if an adult male impregnates a girl under the age of consent. In that situation, the laws of alimony may also come into effect.

For the State to require an individual, not bound by contract, to be financially responsible for a "private" matter of a second party, the very essence of freedom, liberty, and justice, that America stands for, is violated.

Cutting the back story short, I was in an emotionally draining and somewhat abusive relationship. My ex used to cheat in ways that were mostly verbal ie suggestive texts and pics, just never really physical. But because of him going back to his ex, he forced me to get an abortion using his friends and family. I always tried to give him whatever I could, I worked after I terminated the pregnancy in order to share costs with him. I ended up severely depressed and got hospitalized. He never once visited me.

Fast forward to one and a half year after the abortion, couple months ago, I broke up with him. I got close to a friend who is always there to listen to me, and I liked how he was so kind to me and literally to everyone around us. Somehow I wished that this was my boyfriend. Thereafter, I broke up with my boyfriend as I couldn't get rid of the worsening depression he was causing me and also I wanted someone who is kinder like my friend.

My friend wasn't looking for a r/s as he was always busy working, and somehow we are close and yet I know so well that I'm in the friendzone. To keep our friendship, I rather keep things simple. I mean, I feel like my friend deserves way better. Now my ex knows that there are other guys trying to get me to be their girlfriend, but I'm tired of a r/s. My ex bought me things he never used to get for me. He became so nice overnight that I wasn't sure that this was the same guy with me before. Well.. it might be the sex, but I don't really feel like someone can change permanently? It could be that he felt threatened and hence was trying to win me back. But it's suffocating me, that and other guy's attention to me. I just want to be alone, and I'm almost sure that I don't want my ex to be a potential s/o. Any thoughts on what he's trying to do?

In most Western countries where serious disability/abnormality of a fetus is medical grounds to have a pregnancy terminated if the mother chooses, Down's Syndrome is one of the conditions included for which this is an option. I agree with being allowed to have an abortion if any baby born would have a terrible disability that would leave it with little/no quality of life, but to me, Down's Syndrome doesn't seem to fit that bracket- people with Down's Syndrome don't seem unhappy or afflicted. I understand raising a child with Down's is probably really challenging and each pregnancy is unique in its own sense, but broadly speaking I don't think Down's Syndrome should be a reason to terminate a pregnancy. Am I being too simplisitic? What does anybody else think?

I would like to see many different answers/perspectives as this discussion revolves around whether or not abortion should be a legal option for terminating pregnancies that do not involve rape, incest, or when a mother’s life is in danger. For brevity we have abbreviated that issue down to the core question "Should abortion be legal?”

Due to recent advances in pre-natal screening, the number of preborn children with Down Syndrome that are aborted is on the rise, which has created a lot of controversy. About 92% of pregnancies in Europe with a diagnosis of Down Syndrome are terminated. In the United States, termination rates are around 67%, but this rate varied from 61% to 93% among different populations.

Down Syndrome is a chromosomal disorder in which a person is born with an additional chromosome—47, when most babies are born with 46. It is typically associated with physical growth delays, characteristic facial features and mild to moderate intellectual disability.

Most individuals who have the disorder are some of the most happy-go-lucky people you will ever meet, eager to learn, date, get jobs, etc, just like everyone else. They can live very fulfilling and productive lives.

Having grown up with a sister who is both mentally and physically handicapped, I personally could not imagine having an abortion if I found out the baby had Down Syndrome. However, I can also understand why some women would chose this option.
