a lot of people use the fallacious phrases "western" and "applied" sciences.

Western science is meant to distinguish the scientific method from forms of superstition practiced throughout the rest of the world. However western science in this concept is an oxymoron. Science relies on the empiricism, repeat-ability and predictability while all forms of superstition. a lot of people claim that those who advocate teaching science instead of superstition are just westerners who want to impose their way of thinking on everyone else. But the reality is that the scientific method is just as useful anywhere on Earth. Hell even that's an understatement because any alien civilization that would have arisen would have done so via the same scientific method. If there is a such thing as "western science" it would be things like Medieval European Superstitions. Specifically beliefs like the black death was caused by miasma that resulted from a celestial alignment.

As for "applied science" well there was a saying by Louise Pasture that goes as follows:
I can't tell you how many people ask me "what's the application of your research" and even though it does have a very foreseeable application it still infuriates me; like all research has to have a foreseeable end product -_- What do all these people who think that way honestly believe that the scientists who made the innovations that changed our way of living pulled it out of their ass? NO!!!
There is research and it's applications and there is a continuum of more and more foreseeable applications of research but said continuum is cumulative not categorical. All research builds on existing knowledge and if you look at any scientific paper you will see many citations and the research that led to the groundbreaking discovery (at the time) had no foreseeable applications.
