So, I was bored and started reading about Scientology (as you do on a Sunday afternoon). At first I thought that whoever wrote the wiki page just had a sense of humour, until I cross-referenced between sources and realized that.. well.. nope. That's bizarre stuff is pretty much right.

First and foremost, I don't mean to belittle anyone's beliefs (eek.. it might seem like I am) and if this is what you believe in, then power to you. But I was just a little surprised at the level of metaphysicality (yes, I believe I made the word up) involved in the religion. Here are a few examples.

"Scientology teaches that people are immortal beings who have forgotten their true nature."

"Scientology's belief that souls ("thetans") reincarnate and have lived on other planets before living on Earth."

"A thetan is the person himself, not his body or his name or the physical universe, his mind or anything else. It is that which is aware of being aware; the identity which IS the individual. One does not have a thetan, something one keeps somewhere apart from oneself; he is a thetan."

I'm pretty open minded with belief systems, etc. But does any one else feel that Scientology sounds like it would make a (pretty good) fantasy novel?
