Gatsby, a new dating app, scans prospective users for criminal records, and banning them from using the app, no matter how minor their offense.

Gatsby founder, Joseph Penora, explained: 'If you were to just scan for sex offenders you wouldn’t ban people with domestic violence crimes, theft, etc.

'So we scan for both. We block anyone with a crime,' he continued. 'To do a judgment call on each crime and to determine which crime is acceptable wouldn’t feel right.'

Aside from the unique background-scanning feature, the app works like many other dating apps, with a swiping feature to indicate interest.

People who have simply been arrested will not be filtered out by the app, with only those with convictions being banned.

In order to make sure that no criminals slip through the screening initially, the app's data is updated monthly and users are 'constantly' scanned.

Each background check takes just 3.2 seconds to perform, according to Penora.

If a user is found to have a criminal record, they won't be directly informed that they are banned, but will rather be confronted with a message claiming 'we need to further verify' and won't be able to use the app.
