I don't know if I can survive visiting my family any more. I just ended my first year back in school, and am at a high point in my life. I was in control of my depression, anxiety, and attention deficit, haven't missed a pill of my meds for six months. But today I was wondering which overpass abutment to ride my motorcycle into.

I was the last of six kids, born to a rough environment, but most of my life I was raised with just one sibling, while the others (all of them are from another dad) proceeded to ruin their own lives. To make sure we got our fair share, fate put us with a child molester for a stepfather, one Mom took us away from once, only to take us back again.

All my siblings are either alcoholics and drug users, except for one that quit and has just turned into a contraries who's no fun to talk to.

I'm nearing middle age, and have suffered from depression all my life. I was doing cool until I came to visit, and now I'm right back down, thinking of ways out, etc. And I'm just sick of it.

Mom's always been the Blanche Dubois of the family, the swooning, suffering, poor-little-me type, that no one can blame for anything, yet they all grew up completely impossible to live with. One's even been ejected from the brood, and is in a homeless shelter somewhere in another state. Of course, none of the older siblings want to find him.

Since I got here last week, my things have been gone through by at least two of them, my brother in law has started playing one side against the other with me and my brother, and Mom gets depressed every time I only take a reasonable portion of food. Literally. Her dog has a tumor the size of a cantelope on her belly, can't get up the stairs she's so obese, but she keeps feeding it. I'm starting to feel like I've a family like one of the ones on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

NONE of the women that I've brought home have lasted more than a few dates afterward.

I hate feeling like this, at my age. Like I'm blaming other people for my problems. But I am fine elsewhere.

I have a son, and was going to bring him down here, but two days beforehand, my brother decides to reignite old quarrels, and right now I just can't stand to speak to anyone. I'm sick of this broken record, and feel like never coming back.

Is this acceptable? Can I just walk away, when I move on from this vacation, and cut ties? Every time I speak to them on the phone they are so negative I'm yanked back into the whole life I've had to live here.

I don't want to be a quitter, but that's all I've ever learned to be here, at "home." When I tried to succeed as a kid, at sports or band, or anything, the first time things got hard, Mom just told me to quit, and put her apron around me, and pulled me back into failure.

Should I just take my son and go camping and to a theme park and enjoy ourselves, or should I bring him here, knowing there's a 48 hour maximum time frame before insanity starts again?

Should I just quit coming back to visit?
