When first dates go right, it can be SO great. . . but when they go wrong. they can be awful.

With online dating, sometimes they show up and you immediately realize online pictures were taken 100 lbs. ago. Been there/seen that. At my age, some of the women who are on dating sites are really not ready to be dating; the divorce was ONLY six years ago and they are still dealing with it! I have never had a woman ask how much money I earn because as soon as they hear that I am an attorney, they assume that I am filthy rich (bad assumption.) I have had women who ordered four mixed drinks during the course of a dinner; I'm always okay with them having two drinks but, by the time they get to number four, I assume they have an addiction or dependency problem. I've also been on the wrong end of a one-sided conversation that I thought would never end. Finally, it's nice to be wanted, but. . . I've also had first dates on which it became obvious that she was already planning our next three dates and where we would buy our first house together. Run, OAW, run!
What happened on your last One And Done that was so bad that you never wanted to see him or her again?

When I have a first date with a lady, I may get a haircut in advance. I make reservations at a very nice restaurant. I clean out my car, wash and vacuum it, and do a general detailing. If the date is on a Friday night and I am coming from work, I am wearing a suit and tie. On Saturday night, I wear "business casual" attire and I will occasionally purchase a new shirt or new pants for the occasion. I am well groomed and I apply a SMALL amount of after shave. On the date, my chivalrous manners are out in force. I open doors for her, help her get seated, and I was attentive to her.

Why do I do all of this? It makes a statement to my date: this guy takes dating seriously, he wants to make a good impression on me, and he will treat me nicely if I get into a relationship with him. Yes, I know that many guys on this site will say that this is WAY too much effort and I am making myself subservient to her by "sucking up" so openly. That is not true. I make it clear to a woman that while I am willing to treat her like a queen, I will expect her to treat me like a king.

The women I date have a similar attitude about dating and, in particular, a first date. They arrive for the date dressed very nicely, very nicely groomed, and it is obvious that they, too, want to make a good impression. This is how my generation dates.

I could go the casual route but I fear that my date might think that none of this is a very big deal for me or maybe I am one of those guys who is afraid to show any signs of caring at all. I think that is a horrible impression to give on a first date.

How do you approach a first date?

In real life, the internet, media... etc its obvious that women like good looking men, like really like them and its probably easier to get laid if you're good looking... but what about a serious relationship?

I read it in so many forums and even asked some girls in real life and they all give the same answer... good looking guys attract lots of women, they usually have experience with women, they can get women easily, and simply put women are not very interested in being with a guy like that , a guy that has options and if he chooses he can leave... sometimes i find it to be just a bunch of bull.

other times i look at myself and my friends, we're all fairly good looking guys and get complimented, and started at by women often, not to mention hit on sometimes... but having anything serious and meaningful seems rather hard, either women dont give us the time of the day, and when they do they dont seem interested in anything serious and want to boost their self esteem... when we look around we see all these average and bellow average guys with gfs, and sometimes even hot ones, and we can't help it but wonder what they have and we dont, esepcially when some of these guys have personalities as bland as their looks and aren't that rich or popular... so what makes women choose average men over attractive ones when all other stats are equal?
