When you travel, do you prefer to rough it by backpacking and staying in campgrounds/hostels or go in style by staying in nice hotels?

I have travelled extensively and always loved backpacking. The joyous unknown of the road is such fun. And staying in hostels always leads to an intrepid adventure through the diverse people you meet.
