I was recently online inquiring with Whole Foods Market about buying a whole cooked turkey for Thanksgiving. Wanting to know about the taste/quality I was skimming through the comments when I read this from a commenter:

"I am interested in purchasing a turkey who lived a species-specific life. Not only outside but was not confined--or if confined, had grass and room (not crammed). I live near small farms and see how some raise them--they are local and outside but really confined and stuffed in a small area. I am not interested in that kind of set up. Do you have any information like that on the history of your turkeys for Thanksgiving? Thanks"

I'm not saying we shouldn't care about animal welfare, but how hard can you really care for something you are about to gut, stuff, bake/fry/roast and eat on your plate? Does the 'life and times' of the turkey really matter if you're eating it? I mean if someone really cared this much, why are they eating meat in the first place? Why aren't they a vegetarian? (Side note: WFM responded that "We have started the Global Animal Partnership which gives specific level ratings to the meat we sell based on the life the animal lived.)

Sigh...
