This has been an ongoing debate over the years in the hockey world, whether the fighting that is allowed to take place, should continue in the sport because there are so many player injuries as a result. One former enforcer, Robert Frid noted that in his 3 years in junior hockey career and 8 years in the minors, he got 75 concussions which left him on the permanently disabled list in his 30s. Many players feel forced to fight because of the nature of the game and what they say both fans and management demand. League management argues that it has been a part of the sport since it's inception and if players didn't get out and have these scraps, things like high-sticking, cross-checking, slew-footing, and other egregious behavior would only intensify and make the sport even more dangerous. To date, no player has died from said fights in the major leagues (one has in the minors), but people wonder if it is only a matter of time and perhaps sadly what is needed to actually change this part of hockey culture.
