After first moving to California, I lived in apartments, before buying, and lived in a really nice complex near Santa Ana, that was close to everything, movies, entertainment, shopping, freeways entrances/exits, the works. Along with that was a Safeway Store, where after running everyday, I went to shop. Well, Toni, one of the cutest checkers I had ever seen, was very friendly towards me but, then most persons in retail are friendly and cordial to customers. This went on for some time.
One day, talking to her, she said she was 'engaged' to "DAVE" a real asshole of a guy, that I had talked to prior. She walked through the store with her and he said to me: "Have you ever been involved with someone and engaged, and then met someone else that you liked very much"?
I, stood there like a moron, and said, "well I guess so". "Have you met someone, that you are interested in more than DAVE" ? She said: "Well, I have always thought you were so very nice" !
I felt like I had been struck by lightning !!! Jesus, I thought, Bruce, do you have to be hit with a baseball bat? I have regretted that day until this day ! I will never live that down.
