Sometimes I've wondered about this. When does it start being animal cruelty?

As school boys, my friend and I used to be jerks to a couple animals but never did terrible things. It was meaning teasing them. For instance, we would throw fruit punch juice with our squirt guns at pigeons, cats or a couple small dogs. Another time it was throwing mud at a neighbor's cat, putting our old Halloween mask, saying ''boo'' to it at times and once painted its tail as a prank. Eventually we felt bad and stopped doing it.

In your opinion was this still animal cruelty even though we never tortured them, nor hurt them badly such as Ted Bundy setting burning a cat to death as a kid... nothing of that nature?
