Points to ponder:

1. Is a college education really essential? There are many careers available which do not require a college education. Most construction trade jobs do not require a college degree and those workers can make as much money, or more, than many who have college degrees.

2. Does every college education enhance a student's vocation potential? How many people get jobs as a philosopher or art historian?

3. For those students who obtain jobs which require a college degree, does the increase in earning potential offset the cost of the education? If you believe the answer is "yes," can you cite any credible evidence to support that answer?

4. For those students who obtain jobs which require a college degree, does the education increase their earning potential over their entire lifetime or just at the entry level position?

5. If every person in this country had a college degree, we would have college graduates working as garbage collectors. . . or perhaps we would have no one willing to work as a garbage collector.

6. If every person in this country had a college degree, wouldn't the value of the degree be diminished? One of the arguments for sending kids to college is that "everyone has a high school diploma and you need to get an education that sets you apart from everyone else."

7. If you think college should be free because you think it is "essential," wouldn't the same reason lead to the conclusion that food should be free? Housing should be free. . . right?

8. Obviously, college is not free; it is an expensive undertaking. "Free" college would require tremendous support from tax dollars which are already stretched thin. Would you be willing to pay 60-80% of your income in taxes so that other people's children could attend college at no cost to them?
