Daniel Penny, the 24-year-old military veteran facing criminal charges for putting a New York City subway rider in a fatal chokehold earlier this month, was acting as a “Good Samaritan” in the eyes of hard-right Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

He shared a link to where Penny is collecting funds for his legal defense on Twitter Friday evening.

In the same post, the governor — rumored to be launching his bid for the Republican presidential nomination any day now — ranted against “the Soros-Funded DAs” in reference to popular right-wing boogeyman George Soros, an elderly Jewish billionaire who supports progressive causes.

Penny surrendered on a manslaughter charge this week. The former U. S. Marine claims he acted in self-defense against Jordan Neely, a homeless Black man who openly addressed other passengers in the car.

The 30-year-old’s death set off protests in New York, which struggles to provide adequate services to people without housing, disproportionately represented by people of color, many of whom experience mental health problems.
“We stand with Good Samaritans like Daniel Penny. Let’s show this Marine... America’s got his back,” DeSantis wrote on Twitter.

Former President Trump shared a doctored video clip depicting a CNN broadcast as he mocked the network over the public reaction to his town hall this week.

“That was President Donald J. Trump ripping us a new a—— here on CNN’s live presidential town hall,” anchor Anderson Cooper says on the manipulated video, which was posted to Trump’s Truth Social account Friday morning. “Thank you for watching, have a good night.”

The fake video had first been posted on Twitter by Donald Trump Jr., the former president’s eldest son, who often uses social media to mock liberals and media figures critical of his father and other conservatives.

In the immediate aftermath of Wednesday night’s town hall, members of Trump’s inner circle expressed glee to a number of media outlets at the 2024 White House hopeful’s performance, which on several occasions sparked cheers and laughter from the crowd of largely supportive prospective GOP voters.

CNN is facing widespread criticism from Democrats and media pundits who say it made a mistake in giving a forum to Trump, who used the event to promote false claims about the 2020 election, mock the woman a jury recently found he sexually abused in the late 1990s, and voice support for defendants charged with crimes in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has been slammed for how he described the victims of the latest mass shooting in his state.
On Sunday, Abbott used Twitter to offer a $50,000 reward for information on a fugitive who on Friday allegedly used an AR-15-style rifle to gun down five neighbors after he’d been asked to stop firing a weapon in his Cleveland yard.

Pro-gun Abbott described the victims, who were all from Honduras — and who have been identified as Sonia Guzman, 25; Diana Velazquez Alvarado, 21; Juliza Molina Rivera, 31; Jose Jonathan Casarez, 18; and Daniel Enrique Laso, 8 — as “illegal immigrants,” a term considered dehumanizing.

The Republican governor also highlighted how the suspect — 38-year-old Francisco Oropesa — is “in the country illegally.”

The interviewer then followed up asking her if blacks were not her type, and she said yes not black people. Tucker Carlson may be out of a job at Fox News, but Russian state media seems to have an eye on him.
Fox said Monday the company was parting ways with its star prime-time host after 14 years, an announcement that came as a shock to media observers who had watched Carlson rack up ratings by delivering frequently bigoted monologues to a conservative audience. The cable news network, embroiled in several very pricey lawsuits, did not give a reason for its decision.

The Russian state media network RT tried to grab Carlson’s attention over Twitter, writing: “Hey @TuckerCarlson, you can always question more with @RT_com.” An earlier tweet from RT had framed the departure as Carlson’s decision.

(Notably, Twitter does not label RT as a “state-affiliated media” organization, despite it being one. Twitter CEO Elon Musk sparked outrage earlier this month when he labeled the U. S. news outlet NPR as “state-affiliated media,” even though NPR receives less than 1% of its funding from the federal government.)

Russian TV host Vladimir Solovyov, an influential state propagandist, also reportedly signaled keen interest.

According to Politico, Solovyov expressed sympathy for Carlson in a message on Telegram, telling him “the United States mainstream media has lost its last remaining voice of reason.”

Monday’s announcement that Tucker Carlson is leaving Fox News may have been as much of a surprise for Carlson as it was for everyone else.

Although the network’s statement suggested Carlson’s departure was mutual, Carlson gave ― or had ― no clue it was coming during the final moments of Friday’s broadcast ― which is now known to be his last.

During the last segment on his final show, Carlson ate pizza with Tyler Morrell, a Pennsylvania pizza delivery driver who helped arrest a suspect eluding police.
In fact, his final signoff is a cheerful, “We’ll be back on Monday,” though it’s now clear that isn’t happening.
