The story/ fluff: This guy and I have been together for a little over a year now. He and his ex-wife have been separated for a while but the court proceedings have dragged on due to all his assets (he is a millionaire so a lot of property) and because his wife keeps prolonging things. Anyways, he can’t propose until the divorce is official but he asked if I would be okay with a promise ring. I care a lot for him and said yes but now I am worried.

Some context: I’m about 12 years younger than him and a virgin. I know how it might sound but I am a lawyer and have a good career. We hit it off on a dating app and got to know each other well before meeting in person.

The central issue: A few of my friends have worried me because they claim promise rings aren’t really a thing and question his intentions. They think he is doing this to try and make physical advances since I am a virgin but I don’t think so. He always respects my boundaries and has even kept himself from kissing me. What does everyone thing? Are promise rings a real thing and meant to further a relationship or are they an excuse to placate a woman?

So we met a very interesting way to say the least. He says he hired a matchmaker to find me. She called my work phone one day and after review she is very reputable. It’s kind of like a millionaire matchmaker type thing. I was very hesitant for a few reasons. The age gap is more than I would normally be comfortable with (17 years) and he is extremely successful. That is great I just don’t like the feeling when people can “buy” anything they want. So we start going on lavish dates and decently early he pushed sex. We went on about 8-9 dates and were seeing each other 2-3x per week when it finally happened. Since he expects to every time which is fine, but he had seemed a little less interested in me. He is always commenting on my appearance which is nice to hear, but at the end of the day I want to know I am the one he is interested in being around not just looking at. He got sick and for 2 weeks acted extremely distant. I took him gifts etc. Yesterday kind of out of nowhere he started asking all the things I liked as he wants to know so we can do them together and was very chatty, but then he said he had a work dinner. That’s fine, but I sent him a few texts and nothing. To give an idea I usually get 2-5 texts from him a day and the more I am around him the more his phone is around. Now he does work a lot as he owns a few businesses, but I’m not sure I’m the only one in his life. I just feel like I’m getting mixed signals. We have now been on about 20 dates over 2 months and are now on a schedule of 1-2 dates per week. How much am I overthinking this? I just keep coming back to the fact he hired someone, date 2 he said he put his matchmaker membership on hold, date 3 he told me he told his mom about me, he deleted his Instagram right after we started dating, but kept his facebook (we aren’t connect on). He has never said much of anything about his friends or me meeting them. He has never asked about meeting my friends. Thoughts?
