DeSantis’s office says he will boycott NBC, MSNBC over Andrea Mitchell question on Black history

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will boycott media appearances on NBC News and MSNBC shows, according to his press team, until one of the network’s star reporters apologizes for a question she posed about the governor’s education policies.

“There will be no consideration of anything related to NBC Universal or its affiliates until and at least Andrea Mitchell corrects the blatant lie she made about the governor,” DeSantis’s press secretary, Bryan Griffin, said in an email to the network that he posted on Twitter.

The “lie” that the DeSantis camp is protesting is a question Mitchell put to Vice President Harris last week, in which she asked: “What does Governor Ron DeSantis not know about Black history and the Black experience when he says that slavery and the aftermath of slavery should not be taught to Florida schoolchildren?”

Mitchell later said her questioning was “imprecise” but did not explicitly apologize. The Hill has reached out to NBC for further comment.

Griffin said NBC and its affiliates must “display a consistent track record of truthful reporting” before DeSantis, who has had an often acrimonious relationship with the mainstream media, agrees to future appearances.

Last year, DeSantis signed into law the Stop WOKE Act, which prohibited the teaching of Critical Race Theory in Florida schools, as well as lessons about historical topics in ways that would make someone feel personally responsible for a past wrong based on their own race, sex or national origin.

Critics say the measure unfairly limits the teaching of subjects such as the Civil War and the Jim Crow era.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was in New York City Monday to meet with members of law enforcement.

Governor DeSantis took part in a discussion on Staten Island about protecting law and order.

"Is this Florida North or is Florida Staten Island South?" DeSantis said receiving a warm welcome from a room of active and retired police officers and firefighters.

Dozens packed the catering hall Prive on Monday morning, lining up early to ensure a spot.

Top of mind for some there was crime, and they say they wanted to be there to hear what the Florida governor had to say about bringing down the crime rate.

NY public officials criticize DeSantis for voting against Hurricane Sandy relief

As Hurricane Ian pummeled Florida on Wednesday, several public officials from New York criticized Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) for voting against federal aid for Hurricane Sandy when he was a congressman.

“Just a reminder to New York … Marco Rubio and Ron DeSantis (who was in Congress at the time) voted against aid for Hurricane Sandy,” Yuh-Line Niou, a member of the New York state assembly, said on Twitter. “But because we are New York, we care about everyone. Even when they don’t care about us.”

Newly elected to Congress in 2013, DeSantis voted against a federal relief package for New York and New Jersey in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Sandy hit the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states in late 2012, killing more than 100 Americans.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) also voted against the hurricane relief in 2013, as Tristan Snell, a former assistant attorney general for New York, noted.

Donald Trump can access his Facebook and Instagram accounts again

Former President Donald Trump now has access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts once again, parent company Meta confirmed to CNBC on Thursday.

Trump, who was suspended after the company determined his accounts posed too high a risk of further inciting violence during the Jan. 6 insurrection, has yet to post on those channels. Trump has also not yet shared from his Twitter account after it was reinstated under new owner Elon Musk in November.

Trump more recently has gotten his message out through Truth Social, a social media site run by the Trump Media & Technology Group. The Trump campaign’s Twitter account has tweeted a few times within the last month, however.

Meta announced late last month that it planned to reinstate the former president’s accounts in the coming weeks, determining that “the risk has sufficiently receded,” since the original ban in early 2021, “and that we should therefore adhere to the two-year timeline we set out,” Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, wrote in a blog post last month.

Clegg also laid out what he said would be “heightened penalties for repeat offenses,” for Trump and other public figures reinstated after civil unrest, as part of a newly updated policy. If he violates the community guidelines again, Meta will remove the violating posts and Trump could be suspended anywhere from a month to two years for the infraction.

House Republicans’ Hunter Biden Probe Begins With a Thud

House Republicans failed in the opening salvo of their investigation into the finances of Joe Biden’s family to produce evidence substantiating their claims that US intelligence officials worked with Twitter Inc. to suppress an unflattering 2020 news story on the president’s son.

Former Twitter Inc. officials testified Wednesday that their decision to limit the spread of the New York Post story about Hunter Biden’s now-infamous laptop and his overseas business dealings was, in hindsight, a mistake. But they said they weren’t directed by the FBI or other US intelligence officials, and the action wasn’t politically motivated.

Many of the documents Republicans displayed at the House Oversight hearing were from the so-called “Twitter Files,” a series of reports shared by journalists who were invited by Elon Musk to examine Twitter’s handling of controversial decisions made under the company’s previous leaders. The first installment of the Twitter Files focused on the company’s treatment of the New York Post story.

Musk gave the journalists access to company emails and Slack messages, and many of those messages were then published on Twitter. Most of the reports suggest without evidence that Twitter made decisions based on demands or pressure from the FBI and the Biden campaign.

“I think you guys wanted to take it down,” House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, who also sits on the Oversight committee, said of the story, which was published just weeks before the 2020 election that then-President Donald Trump lost to Biden. “I think you got played by the FBI.”
