I remember my teen years well. They were filled with huge self-doubt, anger, alienation and anhedonia, but at least by the time I reached 20 (in 1975, when Gerald Ford was the president) I was beginning to see some of those huge boulders rolling away. As a teen, I never actually thought that I was the spawn of aliens but, if I had been, the results would not have been much worse. I never felt that I fit in with my contemporaries and I thought there must be something horribly different about me. They were very uncomfortable years for me.

Almost 50 years later, my view of the world and my place in it has changed drastically and I realized - long ago - that we all have some of those feelings at times. This is summarized very well in my favorite quote (often misattributed to Margaret Mead, the anthropologist.) "Never forget that you are absolutely unique. . . just like everyone else."

Do you feel that way now. Are you "different" and "not quite like all the others?" Are you the square peg in a round hole world?

Let’s start this day on a positive note. Drop one quote that gives you optimism below, maybe it would help someone going through a hard time. Even if it gives them a spark optimism, it’s worth it in my opinion.

I will start by writing one of my favorite Brad Pitt quotes:

“I believe you make your day. You make your life. So much of it is all perception, and this is the form that I built for myself. I have to accept it and work within those compounds, and it’s up to me.”

While some might argue that Brad Pitt is an elitist who was born with looks, luck, you name it. I choose view him as an average kid from Shawnee, OK, who made it to the limelight. I’m not here to discuss him as a person. I just happen to like this quote because it highlights how we do have a choice and we can better ourselves.
