"Our relationships with other animals are a very messy and confusing affair. Some people say without hesitation that they love nonhuman animals (animals) and then intentionally harm them in education, research, entertainment, for food and clothing, and for sport. I always say I'm glad they don't love me. Some people argue -- or simply claim -- we need to harm other animals to learn about them even if we cause suffering and then kill them in the name of science.
