I'm 15 and my sister is 13. My mom is against us getting our belly buttons pierced or wearing crop tops. My dad says no as well. Yet, there are so many girls on musically or instagram that are my age or younger that have their belly buttons pierced and wear booty shorts and crop tops and their parents are fine with it. They can also wear a bunch of makeup and get their hair dyed. I'm not allowed to wear more than mascara and lipgloss. My sister isn't allowed to wear any makeup. Back to school shopping. Not allowed to buy any shorts that don't cover my ass fully. No crop tops. Not even the ones that are 1-2 inches below your belly button and slightly show some skin. definitely not the ones above belly button either. No belly button piercing because it's "trashy". I have friends who have had their belly button pierced since they were 10 or 11 and I told my parents but they said they aren't their kid and I am and I'm not getting that done. I'm not allowed to wear mini skirts or leggings because it shows my ass too much. We are not a religious family and we don't have morals my parents are just fucking weird. We also aren't allowed to wear heels. Do you think my parents are ridiculous?

I recently got into an argument with my mom because I was at the Starbucks at my Target alone when this thirty-something year old man randomly sat next to me, even though there were other empty seats everywhere, and started complimenting me. Now I know this might just be him trying to be nice, but keep in mind that I am a 4'11, 16 year old girl. I politely say thank you but proceeded onto texting my mom, who is shopping in the same Target, to please hurry because I was a bit scared.
Later on, as my mom and I discussed about the incident, the conversation led to an argument about whether or not girls should be showing less skin (even though I was just wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt) to avoid guys' "instinctual" reactions. In her opinion, girls should be taught to wear more modest clothing as opposed to what I thought, which was to teach guys to control their behavior instead.
Her argument is that by wearing revealing clothes, it is almost like girls are "asking for it". Even in hot weather, she says girls shouldn't be so revealing because less fabric doesn't affect your body temperature that much.
As for my argument, I said that instead of pushing the idea of covering up more down girls' throats, we should teach guys to control their behaviors instead. Along with that, I also argued that girls don't even have to be wearing revealing clothing to be catcalled. I gave my outfit, a high school t-shirt with gym shorts and flip flops, as an example of this.
