CPAC 2023: Kari Lake leans into Trump and stolen election claims during gala

Former Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake heaped praise on former President Donald Trump as a "bull in a China shop" during a gala speech in which she repeatedly rejected the legitimacy of her electoral defeat last year.

Lake contended that there is a battle between the "globalists vs. we the people" and characterized Trump as the great champion on behalf of the people during a keynote address to hundreds of VIP guests at the Ronald Reagan dinner for the Conservative Political Action Conference. Her speech illustrated Trump's dominance at CPAC.

"Donald Trump not only warned us about it — he started to dismantle that entrenched globalist machine," she said. "That man was a bull in a China shop. And I missed that man so much. That's exactly what we need right now."

Harkening back to the American Revolution, she suggested that the country was founded through a fight between "globalists vs. the colonists" and that "we still have that DNA from our founding fathers."

She juxtaposed Trump with President Joe Biden, decrying the latter as weak. At one point, she suggested Biden had "blood on his hands for this young generation" due to the border crisis. She later postulated that Trump could've brokered a peace deal in Ukraine in "24 hours."

Hundreds of people attended the gala at the Potomac Ballroom located in the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. Attendees were served steak and salmon.
Tickets sold for about $375 apiece but did not appear to fly off the shelf, with some remaining available a few days before the dinner took place. Guests largely dressed more formally than at the run-of-the-mill CPAC events, which were laxer in attire.

Are Americans Really That Dumb?

“I don’t need to do research, only need to see the obvious.”

So wrote a friend, one of several in a group text where we banter about politics. My friend is staunchly conservative and often makes unsubstantiated assertions.
His message reminded me of a campaign button I had purchased years ago as a kid. It was the only one I ever bought. I wish I still had it, but I’ve never forgotten it. The button, brown with white letters, read, “Question Authority.”
You’ll find that phrase now on not only buttons, but T-shirts, hats and various tchotchkes. It has been attributed to everyone, from founding father Benjamin Franklin to ’60s counterculture figure Timothy Leary to Greek philosopher Socrates. You’ll even find a recent novel, “The Question Authority,” about the decadeslong impact on several female characters who were victimized by their male teacher, a sexual predator.

Regardless of the phrase’s purported origins — which remain unsubstantiated, by the way — my childhood self was a defiantly independent little SOB, and the saying resonated with me.

It has served as a kind of North Star, albeit with caveats, as I eventually amended the phrase to where it has now stood for most of my life: Trust no one. Question everyone. Including yourself. Especially yourself.

Controversial Televangelist Pat Robertson Dies At 93

Pat Robertson, a popular televangelist and founder of The Christian Broadcasting Network, died Thursday at age 93.

Robertson was a prominent figure in conservative Christian political and entertainment circles, and for years promoted sexist, homophobic and Islamophobic ideas on his CBN show, “The 700 Club.”

His death was announced by his broadcasting network. No cause was given.
A former Southern Baptist minister and son of a U. S. senator, Robertson founded CBN in 1960 as the first television network dedicated to Christian broadcasting in the U. S. CBN is one of the largest television ministries in the world, according to Robertson’s website, producing programming in 200 countries and 70 different languages.
“The 700 Club,” which CBN is perhaps best known for, started in 1966 and is one of the longest-running religious television shows. Robertson began hosting the show in 1972 and retired from the show in 2021 at the age of 91.

Robertson founded several other organizations and corporations, including International Family Entertainment Inc., Regent University, Operation Blessing International Relief and Development Corp., American Center for Law and Justice, and The Flying Hospital Inc.

The majority of his endeavors aimed to promote conservative Christian values in U. S. education, media and law. The ACLJ, Robertson’s website boasts, “focuses on pro-family, pro-liberty and pro-life cases nationwide.”
Robertson’s upbringing played a large role in his development as a conservative and a Christian. His father, Absalom Willis Robertson, was a Democratic U. S. senator from Virginia in the years before the liberalizing trend that took place in that party during the middle 20th century.

Most in US say don't ban race in college admissions but its role should be small: AP-NORC poll

As the Supreme Court decides the fate of affirmative action, most U. S. adults say the court should allow colleges to consider race as part of the admissions process, yet few believe students’ race should ultimately play a major role in decisions, according to a new poll.

The May poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 63% say the Supreme Court should not block colleges from considering race or ethnicity in their admission systems. The poll found little divide along political or racial lines.

But those polled were more likely to say factors including grades and standardized test scores should be important, while 68% of adults said race and ethnicity should not be a significant factor.

The poll reflects general support for affirmative action even as the future of the practice remains in doubt. The Supreme Court is expected to rule soon on lawsuits challenging admissions systems at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina. With a conservative majority on the court, many college leaders are bracing for a decision that could scale back or eliminate the use of race in admissions.

Americans’ views on race in admissions — that it should be permitted but only be a small factor — generally line up with the way colleges say they use it.

Many colleges, especially selective ones, say race is one of many factors that officials can weigh when choosing which students get accepted. They say it is not a large influence but may sometimes give an edge to underrepresented students in close decisions. Colleges defend the practice as a way to bring a wide mix of students to campus, saying racial diversity benefits all students.

A Loud GOP Minority Pledges to Make Trouble on Ukraine Military Aid

A congressional delegation of five Republicans and two Democrats met with representatives of Ukraine’s parliament this month in Poland, where the Ukrainians thanked the delegation for U. S. aid and asked for F-16 fighter jets to help in the war against Russia. Three members of the delegation described the meeting as cordial and informative.

One left the session in a state of indignation.

“I just got back from meeting with the Ukrainian Parliament in Poland, where they demanded F-35s and thought it was an obligation for every American to pay $10 a month to fund their war,” first-term conservative Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., wrote in a heated email to this reporter three days later. Ukrainians are not asking for the more advanced and expensive F-35s, but regardless, Luna said the U. S.’ role in the conflict could “potentially start WWIII.”

Luna is among the boisterous proponents in Congress of former President Donald Trump’s “America first” worldview that regards financial commitments overseas with extreme skepticism. Like Trump, they maintain that every dollar spent on Ukraine — and there has been $113 billion for the war so far — is a dubious investment of taxpayer money that could have been better used on domestic priorities, like fighting the spread of fentanyl. Senior Republicans who support the war and maintain the hawkish traditions of the establishment GOP fear the movement will gain momentum as the conflict grinds on and Trump’s candidacy consumes the 2024 spotlight.

This Is What Could Happen If Republicans Won’t Increase The Debt Ceiling

No one’s quite sure exactly what the American economy would look like after a government debt default, but economists are sure of one thing: It would be bad.

Very bad. Like “dogs and cats living together” bad.

House Republicans insist they will not vote to increase the debt ceiling without as-yet unspecified steep spending cuts, but President Joe Biden has said he will not negotiate over the full faith and credit of the country.

The debt ceiling standoff went from simmering to the front burner on Monday with Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s warning the government could run out of cash in early June, and experts are warning that failing to give Treasury more borrowing room before it defaults would have catastrophic fallout, not just on Wall Street but also on Main Street.

“Our economy is made up of people. So when people are not doing well, our economy is not doing well,” said Rakeen Mabud, chief economist with the left-leaning Groundwork Collaborative, a group of progressive economic experts.

“Seniors wouldn’t get their Social Security checks, military service members wouldn’t get paid, families wouldn’t get some cash that they need to pay for food. And that would be an absolutely devastating economic consequence.”

Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former director of the Congressional Budget Office and president of the conservative American Action Forum think tank, said the economic spiral downward would begin with panicky investors selling off Treasury debt.
