My boyfriend and I (both latinos) come from a background where we were hit too hard with a household object and both of us think that was too much.

My father would use a belt on me during my very early ages. Practically all the times it was used, he did it in frustration/anger and tend to overdo it to the point I was already crying and pleading for it to stop. He did the same to my younger brother. Long ago when my brother was only 2 years old and nearly dropped a teapot with boiling water, he left a couple bruises on his bottom and the back of one side of his leg was swollen with the belt and he only stopped when he accidently hit one side of his face with it (it happened when my brother was turning around to run).

In my bf's case, it was his mother that used to hit him with a stick or strap. It was pretty much done out of frustration/anger too.

This resulted in my complete hatred towards the usage of corporal punishment on a child, esp if it were my own kid; the person I'm suppose to love, protect, cherish, guide and teacher. My boyfriend only thinks spanking should be done with only the hands but never hard nor ever done in anger. Though his approach is a mild version in comparing to our backgrounds, I still have an issue spanking kids, even with the hands. I also don't agree with his stance that if you don't spank your child they'll grow up criminals.
Now back to my question, shouldn't spanking/hitting a child with a belt, sandals, sticks or any object be classified immediately as assault and child abuse? I definitely think so.

Though I'm generally against spanking, I wouldn't completely close on the option if a partner wants to do with the hands, is consistent (doesn't do it for everything) and not in anger.

However, he is so dead on spanking as the only thing that works on kids and refuses to hear about alternatives options as well too. Is this a good reason to break up? It's not really about his opinion but the fact that he wants only spanking as the first resort for everything that's bothering me. This is going to cause major argument if we ever have a child.

Okay so my view on this topic is simple. I do not believe spanking (normal way, not sexual) your child is abuse. I was. My siblings were. My parents were. My friends were, and we are far from emotionally damaged people.

We care for our family and friends. We hate to see someone get hurt and we respect our elders.

Now I will admit to one thing. This form of punishment can definitely be abused. In that you can be too rough or too intense or do it for anything. Even small things. That's when it becomes physical abuse to me and that's horrible.

But whenever I did something very wrong. I got 1 smack. Maybe 2 and it hurt and I cried. But everytime without fail my parents. Dad or mom would tell me this hurts them more than me and they do it out of love. And I fully believed them. Thank God I wasn't sent to my room. I had so much stuff to do there. Wouldn't learn a thing.

A spank is a quick form of punishment which is easily to translate into being a punishment. It's sore and you don't want it to happen again. That's how I learnt what I shouldn't do. And no they didn't smack me and leave. They explained what I did wrong and I faced the consequences. Many techniques of discipline work for kids. This was mine and if you think you able to tell me if my parents loved me or not or if im damaged that's just laughable.

I reiterate. This form of discipline can be abused and done out of anger or hate. But that's something wrong with the parents mental state. Not the form of discipline. Anything in this world can be a taken too far.

I also find the abuse of children horrible and terrible. But if you can't see the difference in this. Then that's on you.

Dustin is nine years old. he's a really shy boy. at school and Kids tease him for being short but he's an A student. He likes to work with animals and play with legos. Dustin's Mother María is dating a 43 year old Man named nixon. Dustin doesn't like nixon very much.
