I'm moving from San Marcos, TX to Charlotte, NC for my job that starts in a few weeks. This is my first time moving away from my family. My company doesn't pay for relocation so I have to pay for everything out of pocket. It's about a 1,200 mile drive and I'm thinking about splitting it up into 3 days, stopping in New Orleans and Atlanta. Is it a good idea for me to divide the trip up like this or should I do it differently and why?

I personally don't like driving for more than 4 hours, but it is the cheaper option. It's 17 hours on the road and I'm not familiar with most of the route.

To me, the pros of driving are that it is estimated to be $800 cheaper, I don't have to worry about getting a rental car until my car arrives, and that I won't have to ship a lot of boxes because I can put some in my backseat. The cons of driving are that it will take much longer, I will be putting a lot of wear and tear on my car, and I will have to leave 2-3 days early.

The pros of shipping and flying are that I don't have to put miles on my car, I can get there fast, and I won't have to spend a lot of time unloading my car. The cons are shipping is expensive (current estimates are $500-$9,000), I will have to ship more boxes, and I will have to get a rental car until my car gets there (current estimates for a rental are $120-$300).

The money won't be so much of a problem a few months from now because I can pay with a credit card and pay it off with my Christmas bonus, but that may not be so wise. If anyone who has experience with long distance moves can give me some advice that would be great. If you vote for driving, share your experiences. If you vote for shipping and flying, recommend a car transport company if you can, because a lot of them have mixed reviews and I don't know who to trust with my ride.
