I'm not saying I had the worst childhood in the world, but it wasn't goo either

I don't know who my biological father is, my first stepdad was a drunk who gave me the wrong perspective of the world mostly about women and black men. I was bullied in elementary school and I still deal with the scars. My mother never really helped with my personal problems as a child, she just got mad when I brought it up. I had no real friends, the friends I had in high school stopped inviting me to come after I left school and had fun without me, so I basically shut them out of my life. I watched my brother and sister get abused by their romantic partner and do drugs as a young child. When I was 13 my mother divorced my then stepdad and he took EVERYTHING, left my mother and I homeless for a bit and we were poor from then on, and my 2nd and current stepdad is on disability and doesn't get much.
I look back at my life now and realized that it was a total waste plagued by mental illness, rejection, ostracism and neglect. I never got to go on family vacations, play with the new video games, watch the cool TV shows, go to parties, go to events or any of that. So far my life has been me just waiting and hoping, 21 years of basically nothing. I remember how embarrassing it was going to school and listening to my peers talk about the cool things they got to do and I could only say "oh that's cool", I still remember the douchey kids laughing at me when I said that I did and had nothing. I know it may seem petty and materialistic but I can't seem to let it down. Mental illness basically swallowed me whole.
I'm planning on seeing a psychiatrist to get help so I can live a happy productive life. Can I have fun as an adult to make up for a depressing childhood?

Well, it's happening, I'm going to do it

I've been suffering symptoms of Schizophrenia and Depression for years now. I think I'm going through my active phase. Lately I've been hearing and seeing things that aren't there, my thoughts and speech have been disorganize. You can probably see my disorganized thought process here on G@G lately, me saying and thinking things that I had no control over. My food addiction is in full swing, I just spent all my money on food and alcohol and I have fees that I can't pay. I'm afraid of what delusions are going to come from this one and if I'm going to do something that I regret.

This morning I had an episode. I felt very depressed and angry, I just cried and shook and felt like tearing my room apart, I had voices and thoughts going through my head telling me how worthless and weak I am and that everyone hates me and I had visions of me harming myself and others. On my way to the gym I didn't know which reality I existed in or if I physically existed myself.

I just had a talk with my mother and I opened up to her. We decided to schedule an appointment with our doctor and see if I can get a referral to see a psychiatrist. I'm sitting here writing this with tear in my eyes and I feel scared. It feels like there's an anchor in my stomach. Is it normal to feel this way? I'm really trying not to bitch out of it and to get the help I need.

I've been suffering symptoms of Schizophrenia and Depression for years now and I'm going to have to seek help soon. Lately when I'm walking to the gym a 4:30 in the morning when nobody was around I would hear a second set of footsteps, I would stop, listen and look around to see nobody in sight, ahead of me in the distance I would see people running across the street and disappear, I would have the feeling of being followed and would want to run, I just kept telling myself to keep it together and they're not real, but this is minuscule compered to when the active phase is in full swing. My speech and thoughts have been getting disorganized, yesterday I found myself laying on my hard wood floor murmuring gibberish to myself.

My last active phase was in October and November of last year and during that time I heard voices bullying me and telling me to do horrible things to myself and others, I would also hear gunshots, bangs, screams and other loud noises that had me going downstairs and ask my parents if they hear it just for them to say that they didn't hear anything. I also remember seeing the hallucinations I'm seeing right now, scariest one was seeing a dozen heads peeking through the wooded area by my gym like they were spying on me. I had the delusion that the government kidnapped my cat and replaced him with a robot to spy on me and I ended up kicking my cat out of my room for a week. That was scary and I barely left my house for the entire 2 months it went on.

I'm afraid that the psychiatrist is going to accuse me of "faking it." I've tried to talk to my mom about it a couple times but she always would beat me down even more. I'd hate to seek professional help for them to do the same thing. I more of an effort to hide my illness than to express it. I don't like talking about it nor do I brag about it like those teenagers who think they're "mental" just because they dye their hair and pierce their nose.

PLEASE HELP

I'm 23, Girlfriend is 24. We have been together for 4 years.

I was diagnosed with depression and severe panic disorder many years before I met her, however, it is off-and-on and I was fairly stable during the time I met her. This past year I have been at a constant peak with my depression and panic disorder and have been seeking professional help.

My girlfriend started going through depression for the first time. I honestly think that being around my depression was toxic for her and caused it.

With my depression I am very down, sensitive, and want my space. With her depression she is very angry, needy, and wants to be with me every day.

We agreed to both start therapy right away.

She went to 2 therapy sessions then quit. She said therapy isn't for her. She hasn't made any effort since then to seek help or engage in activities that could help. This really disappointed me and made me feel like I was alone in the journey.

I have been going to individual therapy twice a week, group therapy once a week, and seeing psychiatrist once a month. Also in 2 weeks I am starting an intensive therapy program which will consist of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for at least 6 months. I am very serious and committed to getting better.

I suggested we breakup and take time apart to focus on our own health with the possibility of getting back together in the future. We are both severely depressed and with how opposite we are, we can not meet each others expectations (me needing patience and space, her needing patience and extra attention) and it causes arguments. She cried and begged me to stay. She said if we truly loved each other then we would stick together through the hard times, support each other, and help each other grow.

I'm not sure if she's right. I'm worried about making the wrong decision. What would you do?
