Can anyone get schizophrenia or is it just some unlucky people?

I've always been told that it is sort of genetic or at least something you already have in your genes and can develop later on in life. But my sister insists that if I bottle up my feelings too much, I'll become schizophrenic. I've never heard anyone say this and I've always been sure that schizophrenia isn't as simple as depression (even though depression isn't really simple either).

I go through depression waves, some months everything is great and some I just feel dead and empty. I've never told anyone this except my psychiatrist, and she didn't really help me with it she just told me I was currently depressed (and I was on one of my better days that day).

Either way, as someone who's had issues for almost the whole decade I would be surprised if I could suddenly develop schizophrenia if I dive too deep into my own being, seeing as I do that every other month.

I know most people here aren't qualified to tell how it is with mental illnesses such as depression and schizophrenia, but if someone knows anything I'd be happy to know.
