Apparently In the US Hysterectomies or wandering womb surgeries, the removal of the ovaries, and clitoridectomies were regular operations by Physicians to treat hysterical or unmanageable behaviors.

The Women's Health movement in the 1970s stopped the widespread use of these operations and in 1980 the American Psychiatric Association ended this practice.

These operations were based on the Ancient Greek theory that a woman's uterus detached and floated around the body causing mental distress.

In the United States the appendix was regularly removed as a routine measure during the 20th century.

Following early evolution theories, the appendix was widely believed to be useless, vestigial remnant of human evolution.

Doctors reasoned because the appendix seemingly served no purpose, a person was better without it.

In the early 2000's researchers discovered that the appendix is not useless, and it functions as a "safe house" for beneficial gut bacteria.

The appendix also contains lymphoid tissue, playing an active role in the immune system.

Studies have shown that the appendix's unnecessary removal can trigger gut dysbiosis which happens when the helpful and harmful microorganisms in your body (mostly in your gut) lose their natural harmony.
