Talent is the idea that someone has a natural gift or predisposition to a certain thing, whether it is something athletic like a sport, something musical like playing an instrument, writing, drawing, or whatever. My question to you is, do you think that people are truly born with certain gifts in certain areas of life? This would mean a person born without a gift in music could never become a great musician, or a person without a gift in running could never become a fast runner, no matter how much effort was put into the task.

Or, do you think talent is a misconceived version of hard work? In other words, people aren't born with natural gifts towards things. It's only that they worked really hard at a task and people simply see the efforts of the task, not the process.

A third option is that some things require talent while others are all hard work. I.e. someone may say a sports player is genetic-based, while anyone can learn an instrument with enough time/dedication.

So what are your thoughts on it? How many things are talent, and how many things are hard work?

News earlier this week was that a Major League Baseball player named Mike Trout, probably the greatest hitter currently playing the game, just signed a 12-year contract worth $430 million U. S., for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. This makes him the highest-paid athlete in the history of the modern world in professional sports, in terms of this one contract.

What do you think about the huge sums of money that some professional athletes earn? Is it justified? Good for the sport and good for business? Bad for society? Neutral in every way? What?
