I’ve just seen this too many times, and my voice carries.

You simply can't assume that others on a train don’t speak the language you’re speaking on an international train.

Even amongst family, my favourite. My Mom’s older siblings knew that I studied their language and lived abroad speaking it daily for years.

But they thought I couldn’t clearly discern their dialect, the one I grew up hearing, from standard dialect that I learned.

I let my uncle go on and on about my deceased father, myself and my future before finally answering him in English.

He didn’t say anything bad about my father or myself but he felt betrayed. I was I the next room and I’d spoken with him in the standard language the night before.

MY QUESTION IS why did he think it was okay to converse in a secret language?

Turns out I understood the dialect, I just wasn’t a proficient speaker.

I had already given him my Anglo translations to many sentences so he knew I understood him. But he thought once he sped it up and what not that I wouldn’t be able to comprehend.

Unless you speak a rare tribal tongue, maybe don’t risk it?

You can't judge the languages one speaks by appearance.
