As long as one of us speaks the other's language I think it's all good. But even in that case I would definitely try to learn his language so I can communicate with the other's family.
I don't expect him to learn mine but it would be nice if he could pick up some words here in there.

My uncle has been married to a French woman for 15 years and she doesn't speak Arabic, almost zero Arabic. But my childhood best-friend's mother who is Belgian learned Syrian Arabic and speaks it very fluently (although she has a cute accent), granted she's been married to her Syrian husband for 30 years but I still think it's impressive.
Some people just choose to go in-between and just learn the basics to communicate with the other's relatives, for example although my uncle already spoke Japanese, his wife Japanese wife decided to learn Basic Arabic to communicate with her in-laws.

So some people choose to learn their spouse's native language to the point of becoming proficient , some just learn the basics, others don't get bothered at all.
What would you do in that case?

After debating this with someone on here the other day, I'm curious as to what people think.

I personally believe that this is a historically English speaking country & everyone should know it. I respect everyone's culture. Speak what you like at home, but it's a problem if you go out and can't communicate. Working with the public, I can't count how many times people have asked for someone that speaks Spanish, that is not always available. I would never go to a foreign country & demand someone speak my language. I would put in the effort to learn it, like my grandparents did. If you're planning on staying, learn the language. What do you think?
