The U. S. congress was once designed in a way that one representative would represent roughly 30,000 citizens. And indeed, this used to be the case. In 1910, a law was passed to not enlarge congress any further. However, the population naturally kept growing. Today, America is at a point where one congressman/congresswoman represents roughly 600,000 citizens (20 times more). To use a somewhat odd comparison: that's like suddenly having 400 children being taught by one teacher instead of 20 children.
So do you think it would make sense to augment congress at this point in time? Admittedly, this would create some tricky problems... for example the fact that a new government building might have to be built. On the other hand, it could be a great strengthening of democracy. Not only would individual citizens be better represented but currently under-represented groups in society could also profit from this.
It might seem a little crazy to have a congress with, say, 2,000 members instead of 535 but then again, China's National congress has roughly 3,000 members.
