Extra curricular activities (athletic background in particular) seems to be their main priority that they look for in applicant/candidates rather than academic achievements?

I'm just wondering since I know I have a few friends who are Japanese-American and they have accomplished so much academically (more than the majority of the other students at my high school). However, they've never competed in sports. They've applied for Ivy League Universities and prestigious Universities and passed with a much higher than average score on their SATs and ACTs. Sadly, they were still rejected by all of those Universities because of their lack of extra curricular activities and their ethnicity (despite that they technically are minorities themselves) yet a few other candidates that happen to be Black and Hispanic athletes who scored much less than them on their SATs and ACTs and didn't do as great academically in High School, somehow were still accepted by one of those prestigious Universities, which is stupid. I felt bad for them getting discriminated over something like that.

One of the things that pisses me off the most about the University education system and job market in the US is the hypocrisy behind Affirmative Action. Affirmative Action is supposed to be some sort of assistance for minorities and women who are at a financial and social disadvantage. Affirmative Action only really benefited Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans and Women of all ethnicities (including White Women), yet never applied to Asian and Pacific Islander males. Go figure!
