When ever a negative criticism about a race, religion, gender, occupation or place comes up many people get very defensive and there usual response is "don't generalize", you haven't met all of them so you can't make a statement. However, i find this whole thing annoying because it basically makes discussing any controversial issue forbidden and PC.

Why if there has been shown to be a common pattern or behavior in something we can't discuss about it to find a solution/talk about an issue with it? Why do we have to be so sensitive about not hurting the 5-10% that it doesn't apply to and basically allow said issue to fester.

For example:
If someone brought up an issue of saying all terrorist are murdering scum and then make a reference to the strong connection between it and islam.

Someone would comment "don't generalize" you haven't met all the terrorist and not all Islamic are terrorist therefore don't discuss about it. They might even get offended by the murder part and say not all terrorist are murderers don't generalize.

I mean there is a difference between making gross generalization that are incorrect than looking at observe pattern and behavoir of something and wanting to discuss about it. Why can't people see the difference?
