Alex Skeel, recently appeared on television on This Morning, and spoke about the mental and physical torture he endured for months at the hands of his 22-year-old girlfriend, Jordan Worth.

When Alex finally got help because a neighbor heard him screaming, doctors told him he was just days from death, and would not have survived had he not received assistance.During the course of their relationship, 22-year-old Skeel was subjected to every physical and psychological torture technique imaginable, including but not limited to being denied food, being stabbed with a knife, not being allowed to contact his family and friends, being hit with a hammer, bottles, and wood, and even having boiling water poured all over his body.

The domestic abuse survivor was also repeatedly called ‘dumb’, ‘thick’ and ‘stupid’ by his abusive partner.

Alex was mentally and physically tortured by his girlfriend.

He talked about how difficult it was to come forward and escape the situation.

He moved in with her for 9 months, during which time she used to hit and stab him with various objects.
He had suffered second and third degree burns from the boiling water she had poured over his back. When rescued, ambulance staff noted that Alex had self-treated the injuries with cling film. Hospital staff told him that he was 10 days away from death when he was found by authorities.
According to court prosecutor, Maryam Syed, five percent of his entire body was scalded. Syed also told the court that Worth started exercising control over Skeel early on in their relationship, telling him what to wear and who to meet. Worth also broke Skeel’s cellphone so he would not have contact with family and friends, and made him sleep on the floor for 8 months without bedding.
In one incident, she told Alex that his grandfather, the family member he was closest to, had passed away. She then scolded him for crying and being upset only to reveal later that she had made up the whole thing.

Because in the last week, Iceland's parliament unanimously passed new legislation placing the burden of proof for sexual consent on the accused; having sexual relations with any woman is now illegal without definitive proof of their explicit consent. Under the new law, consent must be clearly and voluntarily expressed– rather than the court focusing on whether the victim said ‘no’ or tried to fight back, the accused will now have to prove that the woman consented willingly.

The landmark bill states that:

Any person who has sexual intercourse or other sexual relations with a person without his or her consent shall be guilty of rape and shall be imprisoned for a minimum of one year and a maximum of 16 years.

Consent is considered present if it is expressed by free will. Consent is not considered present if violence, threats, or other unlawful coercion is used. ‘Violence’ here refers to the deprivation of independence by means of confinement, drugs, or other comparable means.

It is also considered rape and shall result in the same punishment as specified in the first paragraph of this Article to employ false pretences or utilize a persons‘s lack of understanding concerning circumstances, or exploit a person’s psychiatric disorder or other mental handicap in order to have sexual intercourse or other sexual relations with him or her, or the fact that, for other reasons, he or she is not in a condition to be able to resist the action or to understand its significance.

Sweden is also radically changing its laws around consent, with the introduction of two new offences, ‘negligent rape’ and ‘negligent sexual abuse’, with a maximum prison sentence of four years, set to be enforced in July; stating that, “It sends out the message that everyone is entitled to control their own sexual engagement and no one can be entitled to have sex with another person under any circumstances without her consent expressed by free will.”
