I consider 9 years to be a big age gap, not the biggest but big. I told my friend I was seeing an older man who was 30 when I was 21 and she said that that's not an older man. for her it's not until he's 40.

I guess I usually hang out with people older 1 year or 2 younger or older than me. getting involved with someone who was 9 years older than me just seemed like a 'big' age gap to me and thus dating an older man
