With more and more people continuing to speak out against the horrors they witnessed and or experienced in psych wards. From people being wrongly detained, patients being beaten, berated, forced to suppress who they are and other atrocities. The field of psychiatry continues to lose it’s credibility and respect. In my opinion, I think there need to be a lot more rules and regulations enforced that ensure psychiatry is only practiced in a ethical/humane manner that doesn’t infringe on the rights of the patients. Psychiatrists need to quit patronizing and infantilizing their patients. While orderlies need to quit acting like SS totenkopfverbande and NKVD prison guards.

The problem is how “mental illness” is stigmatized in society. People who have any type of mental illness get viewed as liabilities and as expendable even though most mental illnesses don’t require hospitalization. The stigmatization of mental illness is why psych ward patients suffer mistreatment from the staff “caring” for them. The staff hardly view them as fellow humans and are only there for their paychecks. Which is also a sign of incompetence in regards to the staff members. Many psych ward staff members are just not fit for the job.

After learning more about psychiatry I’m glad I’ve never been institutionalized and I don’t plan on ever being institutionalized. While psychiatry has indeed made a lot of improvements considering that not all psychiatrists and psych wards are bad, psychiatry still has a lot of room for improvement.

I am a 24 year old male that still lives at home. I am on social security disability and only receive less than $950 a month.

I only have a high school education. I am not really the college-type guy. My ultimate goal is to form my own business one day, yet I have failed to find my niche.

I have tried to learn web development and programming, yet I am having extreme difficulty adapting to the new and booming technologies and I am now burned out on it, at least for now.

I have held 17 different jobs, most of which I have been terminated or forced to resign. I have been kicked out of many college programs. I have also been hospitalized 15 times for mental illness, most have been involuntary commits.

I have 2 misdemeanors on my record, which I am still reaping the repercussions from those.

I never had a girlfriend, and I cannot get over a woman's romantic past. I will likely end up alone for the remainder of my life as I watch my peers get married and have families.

I am depressed. I am frustrated and lost.
